Wellbeing and Medical Information

At Southern Grove Primary School, the health, safety and wellbeing of our students is a priority. We work closely with families to ensure all medical and wellbeing needs are appropriately supported.

Student Health
If your child is unwell prior to the school day, they should remain at home. If a student becomes unwell or is injured at school, they will be taken to the medical room where basic first aid will be provided. Parents or carers will be contacted if required.

In the event of an emergency, it is essential that the school has up-to-date contact details. Please ensure the front office is informed immediately of any changes to phone numbers, email addresses, residential address or emergency contacts.

Medical Conditions
Parents are required to inform the school of any medical conditions that may impact their child’s health and wellbeing, such as asthma, diabetes or allergies. This enables the school to develop appropriate medical or emergency management plans where necessary.

If your child’s health needs change, please notify the school promptly so that plans can be updated to ensure ongoing support and safety.

Medication at School
If your child requires medication to be administered during school hours, parents must contact the administration office to complete the required documentation. For prescribed medication, authorisation from the prescribing doctor is required. Any changes to medication must be updated on official forms, as these are legal instructions for staff.

Students must not bring medication or supplements to school to self-administer.

Head Lice
Parents are asked to check their child’s hair regularly for head lice. If lice or eggs are identified at school, parents will be contacted. Students may return once treatment has been completed and no live lice or eggs remain. In the event of an outbreak, families will be notified to support preventative measures.

Sun Safety - No Hat, No Play
Southern Grove Primary School is a SunSmart school and enforces a ‘No Hat, No Play’ policy throughout the year. Students are required to wear a school hat during outdoor activities. Please ensure hats are clearly labelled and kept at school each day.

We also encourage the application of sunscreen before school. Sunscreen stations are available throughout the school.

Allergies
We are an allergy-aware school. Common food allergies include peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, eggs, soy and seafood. As some reactions can be severe or life-threatening, families are asked not to include nut products (including items such as Nutella or satay) in lunchboxes.

Communicable Diseases
The Department of Health provides guidelines regarding exclusion periods for communicable diseases. Parents must notify the school if their child has been diagnosed with any of the following:

  • Chickenpox

  • Conjunctivitis

  • Measles

  • Mumps

  • Impetigo (school sores)

  • Rubella (German Measles)

  • Whooping Cough (Pertussis)

  • Glandular Fever

Working together, we can ensure a safe, healthy and supportive environment for all students.
