Attendance
Regular school attendance is essential for every child’s learning and overall development. The Department of Education expects students to attend school 90% or more of the time. When attendance falls below this level, it can significantly impact a child’s progress, as important concepts, skills and learning sequences may be missed. Gaps in learning can make it more challenging for students to keep up and may affect their future achievement.
At Southern Grove Primary School, we work in partnership with families to support regular attendance and ensure every student has the best opportunity to succeed.
Absences
If your child is unwell or unable to attend school, please notify the school on or before the day of absence by contacting the front office or emailing your child’s teacher with a reason for the absence.
Late Arrivals
Students who arrive late must report to the administration office to obtain a late pass before going to class. Students arriving after 10:30am will be recorded as absent for that session.
Vacations During Term Time
Family holidays during the school term are strongly discouraged, as they can have a significant impact on student learning. Extended absences may result in students missing entire units of work or key concepts, which can affect their ongoing progress.
If leave during term time is unavoidable, parents are required to complete an Application for Extended Absence form and submit it to the school prior to the leave. Please note that such absences will be recorded as unauthorised in line with Department of Education requirements. Completed forms can be returned to the front office or emailed to southerngrove.ps@education.wa.edu.au
By working together, we can support consistent attendance and ensure the best possible outcomes for every student.
